Visiting grandmother's hometown in Moscow

So I'm finally doing it, heading to Moscow to see where my Russian grandmother was born. She's told me so many stories about that city over the years, showed me all these old photos from when she was young living there. Figure it's time to see how much it's changed since she moved to the States decades ago. I'm planning to explore everything on my own, can't stand those tour groups with guides who drone on forever. What are the rental car conditions like in Moscow, and where should I be looking for decent options?
