Agates are sometimes opaque, but they are frequently translucent, and occasionally completely transparent. Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. Translucency, patterns of color, or moss-like inclusions may distinguish this stone from other forms of chalcedony.
